Rough Night for SWLA Basketball Teams

Southwest Louisiana had a lot on the line Friday night on basketball courts across the state.

In Monroe, the Saint Louis Lady Saints and the South Beauregard Lady K's played for their respective state championships. While in Baton Rouge, the DeRidder Dragons were hoping to punch their ticket to the Boys' Top 28 state tournament.

Unfortunately, all three of the SWLA schools ended up on the wrong end of the scoreboard.

#4 Saint Louis was defeated 63-41 by #3 Capitol in the Class 3A state championship game. Remarkably, it is the fourth consecutive year that the Lady Saints have seen their season end at the hands of Capitol.

In the Class 2A state championship #2 South Beauregard was upended by #1 John Curtis 51-41. It was a dramatic day for the Greene family from Dry Creek. The South Beauregard Lady K's are coached by Chris Greene, who's brother Mike Greene is the head coach for the DeRidder boys' basketball team.

#7 DeRidder lost at #2 Glen Oaks 80-57, denying DeRidder it's second trip to the state tournament since 1977. DeRidder was the lone boys' basketball team from SWLA to advance to the quarterfinals.

Southwest Louisiana has one last opportunity to claim a basketball state championship. The top-seeded Fairview Lady Panthers take on #3 Zwolle in the Class B state final. The two teams will square off at noon tomorrow at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe.

St.Louis Tops Jennings, Advances to 3A Championship

Less than one week after winning the Ladies' soccer state championship, Saint Louis High School will play for the Ladies' basketball state championship.

Wednesday night in Ruston, #4 Saint Louis defeated #1 Jennings 59-45 in the Class 3A semi-finals. The Lady Saints will face #3 Capitol in the 3A state championship Friday, March 6 at 8pm. That game will be played in Monroe at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Jennings led 15-14 after the first quarter and 28-26 at the half. But the second half belonged to Saint Louis. The Lady Saints outscored the Lady Bulldogs 33-17 after the break.

Saint Louis had four players score in double figures including Jazzmin Smith who had a monster game with 15 points and 21 rebounds. Kiara Etienne scored a game high 17 for Jennings.

South Beauregard Advances to 2A Final

The South Beauregard Lady Knights have clinched a spot in the Class 2A state championship game.

Monday night in Monroe, #2 South Beauregard defeated #6 St. Thomas Aquinas 65-58 in the semi-finals of the Ladies' Top 28 state basketball tournament. The win had to be especially sweet for the Lady Knights who were knocked out of the playoffs last year by St. Thomas Aquinas.

#2 South Beauregard will face #1 John Curtis for the Class 2A state championship on Friday, March 6 at 6pm.

South Beauregard and St. Thomas Aquinas were locked in a 26-26 tie at halftime, but the Lady K's pulled ahead for good in the third period.

The Lady K's got 63 of their 65 points from three players. Stephanie Barrow led South Beauregard with 32, Jenna Diakos finished with 21, and Jenna Lee added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Oakdale Eliminated at Top 28

Seven Southwest Louisiana schools were invited to the Ladies' Top 28 state basketball tournament held this week in Monrore and Ruston, and we are now down to six.

Lady Saints do it again!

Friday afternoon the Saint Louis Lady Saints wrapped up their season with a second straight Division III soccer state championship. Saint Louis defeated Sacred Heart 4-0 at Independence Stadium in Shreveport.

Last year the Lady Saints also defeated Sacred Heart in the state championship game 2-1.

"It was amazing when the final whistle blew and the scoreboard read 4-0," Lady Saints head coach Duncan McDonald said. "It didn't hit me at first. It took a while to sink in, and now that it has, it feels a lot more satisfying this year."

Saint Louis scored three goals during a five minute span midway through the first half to take complete control of the game.

Most of the goals were not scored by the Lady Saints' usual suspects. Senior Maddy Landry scored a goal and had an assist and was named the Champinship game MVP. However, the rest of the Saint Louis goals were scored by freshmen.

Kelsey Ellender, Amber Doiron and Jodi Chatters each found the back of the net letting everybody know that the future looks bright for the Saint Louis Lady Saints soccer program.

"Some of the girls that scored have been role players all year that would come in and give our starters a rest," McDonald said. "They came through big time! Obviously they were listening because they knew where to be, they knew where to run, and they knew how to finish a ball."
